Following a successful first season, Heartstopper returned for a second go-around in August 2023. But one character looked a bit different in the new episodes — Tao Xu, played by William Gao in season 1. The rest of the season 2 ensemble cast included Joe Locke as Charlie Spring, Kit Connor as Nick Nelson, Yasmin Finney as Elle Argent, Tobie Donovan as Isaac Henderson, Corinna Brown as Tara Jones, Kizzy Edgell as Darcy Olsson, Rhea Norwood as Imogen Heaney, Sebastian Croft as Ben Hope, and Olivia Colman as Sarah Nelson. While no one questioned if any other season 1 character had been recast, the same couldn't be said for Tao.
Tao is one of Charlie's closest friends in the Netflix romance comedy-drama series who was convinced that Nick was straight in the first season. As Charlie got closer to Nick, Tao felt more excluded and like he was losing his best friend. However, Charlie and Tao thankfully made amends by the season 1 finale. In Heartstopper season 2, Tao's main storyline revolved around his burgeoning romance with Elle, but after watching the new episodes, some believed that Netflix recast Tao's character.
