Don't hang up if your iPhone calls 911 for you
Wait a moment and tell the operator you're A-OK. Here is why.

Memorial Day Weekend kicks off the unofficial start of summer, and that means fun. However, some summer activities—think roller coasters or mountain biking—can only lead to 911 calls. Not that anyone got hurt (thank goodness!), but that fun triggered a false alarm on your Apple Watch or iPhone 14.

Apple has been busy rolling out advanced security features, including drop and crash detection. The features are great if you've fallen or bent a fender (or lost a race to a bear) and the latest iPhone 14 and 14 Pro models can even send emergency SOS via satellite if you're out of cell coverage. . (A hiker rescued in Alaska is now Apple's biggest fan.)

All these useful security features come with a risk - accidental false alarms. Crash detection became available in September. Last winter, when snowflakes (and skiers) began to fall, Colorado's ski towns realized their 911 services were flooded with false automatic distress calls. The New York Times reported that 911 dispatchers in Summit County (home to the Breckenridge, Keystone, and Copper Mountain resorts) received 185 false accident reports in just one week. Although iPhones and Apple Watches sound loud alerts during alarms, helmets and heavy coats often prevent skiers and snowboarders from hearing and silencing alarms before emergency services are called.

Thick coats are not a problem in the summer. But now users have a new mandate from Apple: If an alert is triggered, people must stay on the phone until they can talk to a carrier. MacRumors has updated Apple's crash support document to be the first to tell users not to turn off automatic calls to 911 until they've notified emergency personnel that it's not a true emergency. In the previous version of the document, a now-deleted line read "If you don't need to contact emergency services, tap Cancel and confirm you don't need emergency services." Now, you have to stay on the phone.

The company still has not made a fix for cases where the alerts are not noticed. In the meantime, you can temporarily disable automatic alarms by going to Settings, then Emergency SOS and selecting Turn Off Call After Severe Crash, and you can happily return to summer.
