New Book Reveals How BBC Interview with Princess Diana Was Carefully Manipulated

London – December 7, 2025

New details from a recently published book have reignited controversy around Princess Diana’s infamous 1995 BBC Panorama interview, revealing that journalist Martin Bashir allegedly coached Diana on her answers and manipulated her emotions before the broadcast.

The revelations come from “Dianarama”, a new investigative book by British journalist Andy Webb, released on the 30th anniversary of the bombshell interview. The book challenges long-standing conclusions from the official Dyson Report, which previously examined the BBC’s role in the scandal.

Coaching, Deception and Pressure

According to author Sally Bedell Smith, who has covered the British royal family for decades, Diana’s brother Charles Spencer revealed in private interviews that Bashir used fabricated documents and false claims to gain Diana’s trust. These tactics allegedly convinced her that powerful forces were acting against her, increasing her sense of isolation.

New testimony suggests Bashir rehearsed Diana’s answers in advance, turning the interview into what critics now describe as a performance rather than a spontaneous conversation.

Diana’s Regret After the Broadcast

Friends close to the princess say Diana expressed deep regret after the interview aired on November 20, 1995. That night, she attended a charity event as the broadcast sent shockwaves across Britain and the world. The following days were marked by intense media attention, emotional distress, and growing doubts about her decision to speak publicly.

Diana’s longtime friend Roberto Devorik, who was with her during that period, reportedly witnessed her anxiety as global reaction spiraled out of control.

BBC Still Facing Questions

Although the Dyson Report (2021) confirmed Bashir used deceptive methods, it controversially stated that Diana would likely have agreed to an interview anyway. This conclusion is now being strongly challenged by new evidence presented in the book.

Critics argue that the report downplayed the BBC’s responsibility and failed to fully acknowledge how Diana’s vulnerabilities were exploited.

A Scandal That Won’t Fade

The Panorama interview eventually played a major role in the breakdown of Diana and Prince Charles’s marriage and remains one of the most watched and debated royal broadcasts in history.

With new documents, eyewitness testimony, and behind-the-scenes accounts coming to light, the BBC is once again under pressure to fully confront its past.
