The National Hurricane Center said Hurricane Hilary was rapidly intensifying in the Pacific Ocean and could bring heavy rain and flash flooding to Southern California and Nevada over the weekend.
The hurricane could potentially bring "significant impacts" to parts of the Baja California Peninsula and the southwestern United States, including up to 12 inches of precipitation in the mountains of Southern California this weekend, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Hilary may be the first tropical storm to make landfall in California since 1939, according to federal weather officials.
"The combination of heavy rainfall, the potential for flash flooding, and strong winds could make this a very impactful event for Southern California," Samantha Connolly, a National Weather Service meteorologist in San Diego, said in a forecast Thursday morning.
